The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is the World’s Best Premium Compact Smartphone

    Strategy Analytics Resources:

To support the claims made by Sony for the Xperia Z1 Compact smartphone, Strategy Analytics compared the specifications of this device against other compact smartphones with a global average launch price greater than €300. Source: Strategy Analytics Ltd SpecTRAX & PriceTRAX Services, 18th December 2013.

The Strategy Analytics SpecTRAX database is an extensive proprietary resource consisting of two key datasets: specifications and availability data. The specifications contained in SpecTRAX cover over 300 attributes relating to over 17,000 announced smartphones, mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, mobile hotspots and USB dongle SKUs. Over 150 new device models are added manually to the database each month, as and when they are announced by the OEMs. Devices are marked as available if they appear in the portfolio of any of the 300 network operators/retailers whose websites we track in 46 countries on a daily basis.

The Strategy Analytics PriceTRAX database tracks mobile device retail pricing across 46 countries and contains over 50 million unique smartphone, mobile phone, tablet and smartwatch prices dating back to 2010. Retail pricing (unsubsidised, prepaid (PAYG) and post-paid (contract)) is scraped weekly and linked directly to devices within the SpecTRAX database.

Strategy Analytics found that the Z1 Compact ranked better than other devices in the same retail category in the following areas: specifications, performance and consumer rating.

Premium Compact Definition: The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact smartphone has been defined by Strategy Analytics as a Premium Compact Smartphone. Consumer and technical/performance claims have been verified against a competitive set of 4 leading smartphones within the same category. These are the Apple iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, HTC One Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. All these smartphones were launched during 2013 and retailed for over €300 at launch (and at the time of analysis). As smartphone retail prices decrease over time, the global average launch price (in Euros) of competitor devices was considered a fair and representative metric for identifying the Z1 Compact’s direct competitors.

Global average launch price was calculated using the unsubsidised retail prices collected across all available retail channels within PriceTRAX during a handset’s launch quarter. Post-paid (contract) handset prices were specifically excluded from the device launch price calculation due to the presence of subsidies. PriceTRAX data was combined with SpecTRAX handset specifications to identify compact smartphones (display size of less than 4.5 inches) with a global average launch price greater than €300.

Strategy Analytics found that, overall, the Z1 Compact’s specifications, technical performance and consumer ratings ranked better than the competitive set, hence its verification of the Best Premium Compact Smartphone claim.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact gives you the World’s Best Processor Performance in a Premium Compact Smartphone

Strategy Analytics researchers conducted processor benchmarking tests with a range of leading third-party applications on the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and on four competitor devices: HTC One Mini, Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, Apple iPhone 5c and Apple iPhone 5s.

Two benchmarking tools were used for testing: 3DMark and Geekbench3
These tools were determined by Strategy Analytics to be the most appropriate tools to use for this assessment. The criterion that determined inclusion in this test methodology was that the tool should be created by a reputable, independent organisation and that it should have a proven track record of delivering meaningful processor benchmark results. For reasons of commercial confidentiality, only tools that could be guaranteed not to make results available to the public domain were included in the range.
All applications were standard public domain versions as downloaded from Google Play

    The following approach was taken:

    • All devices were charged to 100%
    • Each device was powered-on and disconnected from its charger
    • Researchers waited five minutes for each device to complete its boot-up processes
    • Researchers launched each benchmark app and conducted the relevant test (Note: the order of testing was randomised)
    • Each application was run three times on each device and the benchmark scores were averaged across the three observations to produce an average result for each tool
    • These results were converted to an index score for each tool The highest average device score for each test was converted to an index of 100, and other devices had their scores converted to an index based on this baseline
    • To create an overall score, the indexed results for the three tools were averaged. The index results of all three tools were equally weighted in the overall score.
