Claims and test results

The claims on these pages are mainly based on results from tests conducted by Strategy Analytics, an independent global company specialising in market analysis. In some cases, tests were also conducted in laboratories at Sony Mobile Communications AB. All claims were verified at the time of testing. However, as the mobile landscape changes quickly and new phone models are released on a continuous basis, we cannot guarantee that all claims are still valid as you read this. Definition of competetive set

The competitive set included in this report for technical testing was determined by Strategy Analytics to be the latest flagship devices released by global smartphone vendors prior to the dates of testing (May 19-20th 2016). These include: Apple iPhone 6S, HTC 10, Huawei P9, LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7.

World’s Best Autofocus on a Moving Object

Technical Test

Sony Xperia X Performance outperformed all leading global competitors and delivered the most accurate autofocus performance in this assessment.

Methodology: camera speed

Strategy Analytics’ researchers calculated the amount of time it took for each smartphone to quickly launch from standby and capture a picture.

Strategy Analytics’ researchers identified the quickest shortcut to launch the camera application from standby mode on every smartphone in both competitive sets.

The smartphone being tested was securely fastened on a tripod that was placed 70cm from a visually distinct object in a well-lit area that exceeded 2000 lux.

A series of 10 quick launches were performed on each smartphone, which was being recorded on a 240 Frames Per Second (FPS) camera that was trained on the smartphone being tested.

The videos resulting in the highest, and lowest, times were eliminated from the test. From the remaining 8 videos, time measurements were taken from the point when the camera shortcut was first activated, to the first frame when an audial shutter click could be heard in playback software.

Methodology: autofocus

Strategy Analytics’ researchers undertook a series of “head-to-head” competitive assessments, each with two competitor devices stationed on a secure camera rig.

The cameras from each device were set to focus on a stationary individual. This individual then proceeded to run towards the camera rig. A picture was then captured on both devices at the same time, once the running individual had crossed a determined point in the scene.

Strategy Analytics assessed the image captured on each device to objectively determine, based upon position of the object and sharpness of the image, which device captured the moving target sooner while in focus.

All devices were compared ‘head-to-head’ with each other. Where one device produced images that were sharper and with the subject more centralized than the others, it was deemed to deliver the most precise autofocus technology.

World’s Most Stable Video Capture

Consumer Test

95% of participants considered the footage captured by Sony Xperia X Performance to be “Good” or “Excellent” in terms of stability – substantially higher than all competitors assessed in this test.

Strategy Analytics’ researchers captured a 20 second video clip using Sony Xperia X, Sony Xperia Performance and five competitor devices. Competitor devices were:

  • Apple iPhone 6S
  • HTC 10
  • Huawei P9
  • LG G5
  • Samsung Galaxy S7

These were determined by Strategy Analytics to be the latest flagship devices released by global smartphone vendors prior to the dates of testing (May 19-20th 2016).

The video footage was captured under the following scenario:

  • Out of the box settings used on all devices
  • The researcher was in an outdoor environment in daylight with good visibility
  • A smooth road surface was identified for the researcher to ride a bike across

All devices were firmly attached to a metallic apparatus onto a bicycle so that the footage could be captured simultaneously on all devices. This ensured that any motion or shaking was experienced identically by each device during the capture process.

Over a period of two days, 201 consumers assessed the quality of the video footage produced by each of the smartphones. Consumers evaluated the video footage created side-by-side on a large screen (40”) HD monitor. To eliminate bias, the video clips were only identified by letter. The order of exposure was counterbalanced. Participants rated the image on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 = very unstable and 5 = very stable for ‘overall video stability’.
