Overall image quality

Strategy Analytics’ researchers captured images taken by Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact and Xperia™ Z5 smartphones and six competitor devices in 5 different scenarios. Competitor devices were: Apple iPhone 6, Apple iPhone 6 Plus, HTC One M9, LG G4, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy S6. These were determined by Strategy Analytics to be the leading competitors in terms of global sales volume.

Scenarios were:

  • Baby asleep at ultra-low light (4 lux)
  • A plate of delicious food (normal light)
  • Toy train speeding around a track
  • Building at dusk
  • Female Portrait, low-light

In each scenario, the researchers captured three images with each device and selected the sharpest image for inclusion.

Over a period of two days, 200 consumers assessed the quality of the images produced in each of the five scenarios, by each of the smartphones. Equal numbers of consumers evaluated the images created in three different formats: printed out on A6 glossy photo paper; on the displays of the device itself; and on a large screen (40”) HD monitor. To eliminate bias, the device names and brands were hidden from consumers and the images were only identified by letter (A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H). The order of exposure was counterbalanced.

Participants rated each image on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 = very poor and 5 = very good for ‘overall picture quality’.

On average, consumers rated all images captured by Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact as 3.7/5 and Sony Xperia™ Z5 as 3.6/5 for ‘overall image quality’. By comparison, all competitors were rated 3.0/5 on average or less.

In 58% of cases, consumers rated images captured by both Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact and Sony Xperia™ Z5 as either “Good (4/5)” or “Very Good (5/5)”. By comparison, images captured by competitor devices were rated good or very good in 37% of cases or less.

In 32% and 33% of cases respectively (across the five image scenarios assessed), consumers preferred** the images captured by Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact and Sony Xperia™ Z5.

Most Stable Video Capture in a Leading Smartphone*

Best overal video image quality

Strategy Analytics’ researchers captured a 15 second video clip using Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact and Xperia™ Z5 smartphones and six competitor devices. Competitor devices were:

  • Apple iPhone 6
  • Apple iPhone 6 Plus
  • HTC One M9
  • LG G4
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4
  • Samsung Galaxy S6

These were determined by Strategy Analytics to be the leading competitors in terms of global sales volume in Q2 2015. The video footage was captured under the following scenario:

  • Out of the box settings used on all devices

The researcher was in an outdoor environment in daylight with good visibility. A smooth road surface was identified for the researcher to ride a bike across. All devices were firmly attached to a metallic apparatus onto a bicycle so that the footage could be captured simultaneously on all devices. This ensured that any motion or shaking was experienced identically by each device during the capture process. Over a period of two days, 200 consumers assessed the quality of the video footage produced by each of the smartphones. Consumers evaluated the video footage created side-by-side on a large screen (40”) HD monitor.

To eliminate bias, the video clips were only identified by letter (A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H). The order of exposure was counterbalanced. Participants rated the image on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 = very unstable and 5 = very stable for ‘overall video stability’.

Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact and Sony Xperia™ Z5 outperformed the other leading smartphones in this assessment

Our overall result scores Sony Xperia™ Z5’s video stability 4.4/5 and Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact’s video stability 4.2/5 on average. By comparison, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Apple iPhone 6, the nearest competitors, were both rated 3.2/5. The spread of results was from 1.3 to 4.4 on average.

The following steps were undertaken during testing:

  • The distance between first subject (the main focus point) and the camera was set to 60cm. Distance between second subject and camera was set to 150cm
  • Display brightness was set to maximum
  • All devices were charged to 100%, powered on and disconnected from their charger
  • Power Saving mode and all background apps were disabled before placing the device into airplane mode
  • For every device and test, the number of frames was counted from pressing on the camera launch shortcut to the closest object coming into sharp focus
  • Each measurement was taken 10 times and averaged (removing the fastest and slowest recorded values). The test was conducted with a HD video camera to measure the time taken for each device to launch camera and to autofocus

Sony Xperia™ Z5 Compact and Sony Xperia™ Z5 outperformed the other leading smartphones in this assessment
